What makes a business website convert? cover image

Clarity, sequence and proof. Most sites lose people long before the contact form.

Conversion is not a button colour. It is the accumulated result of a visitor understanding what you do, believing you can do it, and knowing what happens next.

Start with clarity. Above the fold, a visitor should be able to answer three questions without scrolling: what this company does, who it is for, and what to do next. Abstract taglines fail this test. "Strategy. Branding. Digital. Marketing." works because it is legible in two seconds.

Then sequence. A homepage is an argument, not a container. The order we use most often: the claim, the proof, the offer, the process, the objection handling, the invitation. Moving proof earlier almost always helps; moving process earlier almost never does.

Proof is the piece most businesses under-invest in. Named clients, real project outcomes, a specific number, an identifiable person willing to say something specific — each of these outperforms adjectives by a wide margin. Unattributed praise reads as decoration and is skipped.

Reduce the number of decisions. One primary action per screen. A visitor who can either start a project, browse work, read insights, subscribe, or call is a visitor who does nothing. Secondary paths should look secondary.

Make the form the easy part. Ask only for what you need to have a first conversation, tell people what happens after they submit and how quickly, and confirm receipt immediately. Every additional required field costs completions, so each one should earn its place.

Finally, measure the behaviour rather than the opinion. Track how far people scroll, which sections they engage with, where they start the form and where they abandon it. A site that is instrumented can improve; a site that is only admired cannot.

One structural note specific to service businesses: your case studies do more selling than your services pages. Prospects want to see the shape of an engagement like theirs. Write them with scope, decisions and outcomes — not just finished imagery.
